Devin Chewning, 24, who had no driver's license, was arrested on Friday night after going through great lengths in an attempt to avoid his arrest, according to a spokesperson from the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.
At around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, a deputy on patrol in the 1000 block of Northbound Warrenton Road spotted an Acura going 66 mph, well above the speed limit, and when Chewning spotted the sheriff's vehicle, he slammed on the brakes, though he was too late, officials said.
The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, though when the Acura got to the red light at the Cardinal Forest Drive intersection, the driver sped away.
Chewning turned onto Baldwin Drive and continued on until the deputy rounded a curve in the roadway and found the Acura, stopped, with the driver extending one hand out of the sunroof and raising the other out of the sunroof as a signal of surrender.
Once taken into custody, Chewning confessed that he ran because he thought he would get arrested for not having a license, and also admitted that he decided to give up because he didn't know the neighborhood well enough.
Chewning was arrested and charged with felony eluding and reckless driving. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.
